February 29, 2008 Dear Rite Aid Member:
UFCW Local 135 is about to enter contract
negotiations with Rite Aid. Our goal is to protect
and enhance the wages, benefits and work rules of
your current contract, which will expire on July 13.
Unfortunately, Rite Aid is taking steps to weaken
your union and diminish our ability to negotiate a
good contract for you and your co-workers.
Starting with its store at 4455 Manchester Ave.
in Encinitas, Rite Aid is seeking out and enlisting
anti-union employees in a blatant attempt to destroy
worker solidarity. Using techniques that it has
developed in other communities, the company is
trying to open non-union stores and separate more
and more employees from the benefits and protections
of a union contract.
This behavior is not acceptable. Please join your
union as we respond with every legal means
available, including rallies, picketing and radio
ads asking the public not to patronize the store in
Encinitas.
Here’s how you can help:
Attend our rally at noon on Tuesday,
March 11, at the Rite Aid store at 4455
Manchester Ave. in Encinitas. You can count
on the participation of your UFCW sisters
and brothers in the Drug and Retail Food
divisions, as well as labor activists from
other unions and industries.
Support your union at the workplace and
in your community. Urge your co-workers to
support the union as well. Let your store
managers and customers know that you stand
with your sisters and brothers 100 percent!
Ask your union representative how you can
help in the struggle to defend your union
and the good wages, benefits and working
conditions of a union contract.
Don’t let Rite Aid get away with this! Join the
fight to protect your union!
In Solidarity,
UFCW, LOCAL 135
